Consultant, Coach & Wellbeing Champion | Gender Diversity & Inclusion Advocate

I am a smart, strategic and empowering leader and change-maker. As a transformational consultant, coach and speaker I’ve supported individuals and businesses to maximize their talent and embrace holistic working practices that are flexible, healthy and sustainable. I am passionate about challenging mindsets to establish a workplace culture that works for everyone and leads to more natural growth. I have paid particular attention to helping women advance their careers and harness their natural leadership abilities before, during and after they become a parent but have supported men and women through various life challenges.

My skills support the co-creation of workplace cultures that are compassionate, connected and vibrant, diverse in thought, inclusive in nature; lead by those who are striving for best practice personally and professionally. Helping leaders embrace new ways to work and be; to close the gender pay gap, reduce the current levels of maternity/paternity discrimination, harness new talent and learn how to attract, retain and support more senior women.

I can offer training to develop leaders who are confident to draw on their emotional intelligence and IQ, to deal with complex problems and support the management and understanding of flexible working that works. I draw on my experiences of supporting over 2000 women in corporate finance, consultancy, law, property, fashion, tech and media, creating a clinic which supported around 10,000 mothers and babies and advising senior HR leaders on organisational design, HR and talent strategies in a business partnering role. My work blends intuitive coaching skills underpinned by 15 years providing evidence-based complementary therapies, yoga teaching, 20+ years in business and the IAC Coaching Masteries™.

It has evolved to create a unique methodology and range of services which primarily offer support to parents and parents-to-be but its principles can support all employees in their personal and professional development. I am a graduate of the 9 month Feminine Power Mastery Program and a short course on Mindfulness based on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

My experiences have allowed me to continually see how parenthood and other life events such as illness, relationship breakdowns and bereavement can act as a catalyst for growth and have a positive outcome when supported and understood. Emotions which are released at these times can open the door to more authentic confidence, courage and creativity but this expressive energy can feel “at odds” within a structured corporate environment which is not evolving at the same pace or doesn’t know how to respond appropriately.

I help identify and challenge unconscious bias, limiting beliefs and behaviours and outdated patterns that are no longer serving the business and work with CEO’s, leaders, managers and teams to help ensure talent is nurtured and businesses thrive.

Can you afford not to hire me?

My exit from corporate life to clients calling me their bumpsnbabyguru and creating Bumps and the Boardroom to inspire women to realise their full potential can be read below.

In the beginning..

Growing up my parents juggled childcare between each other. They both turned down more senior roles to maintain flexibility to care for my sister and I and set a great example of shared parenting but I grew up wanting a high-flying career and a family. 9 years in the luxury hotel industry gifted me some amazing experiences – and great foundational training – but I lacked great female role models who were feminine, likeable and supportive. An enlightened agency boss taught me the benefits of flexible working but returning to hotels it all changed. I had a lucrative path mapped out in front of me but it didn’t feel good. I won new business easily, but the pressure to compete with my peers felt at odds with my urge to lead collaboratively and inspire others.

What makes me qualified to help you?

After a summer island hopping around Greece and a down size from Park Lane to my parents, I left London and a ten-year relationship with a one-way ticket to Australia. I lived and worked part-time on a dive boat, swum with Whale Sharks and got engaged to someone completely unsuitable! I learnt how good it felt to live in the moment and discovered a quiet inner confidence to follow my own path and trust my instincts. After a 6 year adventure I eventually came home. I’d been able to secure permanent residency which opened up the opportunity to study and practice a range of complementary therapies so that when I returned to London I had an eclectic wealth of knowledge and life experiences under my belt and within a short time was part of a boutique therapy practice and running change management programs for Bovis LendLease.

Next steps..

In 2006, I created SW London’s first clinic dedicated to the pregnancy journey and transition to motherhood. Located opposite Chelsea & Westminster Hospital we supported close to 10,000 women and their families with high quality evidence-based therapies and this led to being asked to run a change management program for the NHS. In 2011 my personal needs started to shift. I no longer wanted a fixed clinic location and struggled to manage a growing team who all wanted to work flexibly! I let it all go and developed a simple yet powerful, at-home offering and found a new sense of freedom supporting high-potential women over a 12 – 18 month period as they became mothers. I discovered a natural ability to coach which went beyond the standard role of a therapist. I moved in with my then partner who held a senior position within a private global hedge fund which helped me fast-track an understanding of the complexities and demands of working in the mainly male-dominated energies of the City of London. A pregnancy was short lived and instead his teenage daughter moved in with us and two became three, literally overnight. Balancing work and family were skills I learnt – fast.

Next steps..

My passion and interest in the hospital’s full range of maternity services led me to become a member of Chelsea & Westminster’s Maternity Services Liaison Committee (MSLC) and I held the position of Chair for close to 2 years. In late 2011 and throughout 2012 I was invited to be part of the original Management team for Mermaid who were launching a Maternity Hotel and acted as an Advisory Consultant reporting directly to the Board. In 2013 my life changed completely. I broke my foot in a near-fatal accident and my heart was heavy from the loss of my college best friend and 3 grandparents in quick succession. The man I loved died unexpectedly and my world collapsed. Somehow my practice continued but something shifted in the way that I worked and an even deeper sense of trust in my own ability appeared.

Today..

I see clients who initially see pregnancy and parenthood as a crossroads and choice to take one path or another – rather than a catalyst for career advancement and personal growth. My vision remains to influence and educate industry leaders to help business understand the positive aspects of change and embrace a diverse and inclusive workforce which allows all talent to rise. I believe we can re-shape the way business looks and feels so we can all reach our potential.

Today

I have studied and experienced high level coaching, mentoring and leadership training from a number of business and relationship experts and continue to invest in both recognised and accredited training programs and natural born leaders to realise the value that is gained from personal growth and holding a space for another. I welcomed bereavement counselling when I needed it. My work now blends a wide variety of skills and life experiences. I draw on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy training (REBT) from the Centre for Stress Management with degree-level therapy qualifications and 200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training in Vinyasa Flow. An additional 80 hours Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training allows me to teach Pre and Postnatal Yoga. My leadership inspiration and training comes via reading Simon Sinek, Brene Brown and The Athena Doctrine. I recently completed a 3 day immersive leadership training with Dr Scilla Elworthy and Karen Downes. I am a hands-on Auntie to 8 and 10 year old girls and a 12 year boy. They are huge loves in my life along with running along the Putney towpath, time on my mat and time with friends and family.

I have been featured in the press and chosen by celebrities and journalists as their maternity specialist of choice. I am available for speaking engagements and networking events. For press and business enquiries please contact lisa@lisabarnwell.co.uk
