I love to create bespoke essential oil blends for my clients to use during their pregnancy, labour or as a new mum. At the end of my reflexology treatments I generally include a leg and foot massage with different oils depending on what has been released in the treatment and to enhance the effects.
Essential oils are pure essences extracted from flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, roots and fruits of many common plants which have many different properties including relaxing, calming, soothing and uplifting helping to rebalance both your emotional and physical responses.
English Lavender is my one of my favourite oils to bring a blend together. In my training it was described as the “mother” of all oils because of its wide ranging abilities! Bringing a cooling and calming, “there, there” type of effect, lavender’s chemical constituent or makeup allows it to gently sedate the nerve impulses of the brain and remove heat, acting as a mild pain reliever for headaches and back pain but also effective for temper tantrums, stress and over-tiredness and irritability. Its soothes anxiety and is my go-to on many occasions.
It’s is not recommended to put any pure essential oils directly onto the skin but a lavender spritz (lavender diluted in water) or temple rub (lavender in a base oil) can instantly create a more baby-friendly environment and can be perfect for carrying in your handbag, labour bag or spraying in the direction of stressed out partners!
When you are “hot and bothered” literally and figuratively, lavender is the oil to choose. Adding Rose will create an instant warmth; Neroli, an emotional lift and Melissa, a softening to anger.
If you are close to your due date or a little late lavender will help “soften” any impatience you may be feeling and help you to let go of any underlying fears.
