Money: A Love Story: Untangle Your Financial Woes and Create the Life You Really Want. The title intrigued me!
As author Kate Northrup explains in her Introduction:
Money is “a stand-in for something else…we trade in money for what we want, for things that, in our eyes, have a certain value. Money in and of itself is nothing. It’s what money represents that makes the whole shebang a little complex.
For some, money is a stand-in for love. For others, it’s a stand-in for comfort or joy or pleasure. And for others, money is a stand-in for happiness. And this assigning of value brings with it all the emotions of any relationship.”
I completely agree.
When you are planning a baby, money is often up there; shaping what kind of parent you want and can choose to be.
From whether you organise postnatal “help” in the form of a maternity nurse or take on a nanny as opposed to relying on friends and family; whether you choose to have your baby privately or are happy with the NHS. Whether you shower your newborn with the latest gadgets and gifts or prefer to shop in the sales and accept referrals from friends. Whether you go back to work quickly or never return.
Generally money is a big player in all your decisions.
We all have a different view of and relationship with money and often it’s inherited from our parents. I found the personal Foreword from Kate’s mum very honest and there were some key comments that completely resonated with me. There’s also a number of opening quotes and testimonials from names I respect in the MindBody world – traditionally where money doesn’t mix. But as Rodney Yee says, “a book to place money and finances in their proper perspective..let it be the tool for supporting the joy of living where the puzzle piece of finance fits with the soul.”
I’m enjoying unravelling and strengthening my love affair!
