Open twists are a great way to massage tired shouders and upper back. This part of the body structurally supports an open heart. With the weight of a growing baby and the stresses of life our shoulders and upper back can round.
Before I qualified as a pregnancy yoga teacher, my lovely yogi friend Louise aka The Yoga Cook created a series of prenatal yoga poses or breathing exercises to help connect with your chakras during your pregnancy and help you feel more balanced and in alignment physically and emotionally.
Chakras are thought of as powerful energy centres and the fourth chakra – known as the heart chakra – focuses on love.
Pregnancy yoga for the heart chakra
In your seated position, draw the heel of the left foot in towards the groin.
Allow the knee to rest on the floor or a cushion.
Straighten the right leg, activating the thigh muscles and flexing (toes up) the foot.
Take your right hand to your right knee or higher up the leg keeping the spine long.
Take the left hand behind you and twist through the body so that you can feel the twist.
Inhale to lengthen spine and exhale to move a little deeper into the twist. Feel the heart lifting, opening and expanding at the same time, connecting to mother love.
Hold for 5 breaths.
Repeat on the other side.
